Our Sweet Swedes — part 3 — in Mae Sot
The adventure continues for our team of students from the Mid-Sweden University who are doing their social work internship here. Their next stop in the north was the town of Mae Sot in the province of Tak. This town has a border with Myanmar and therefore, receives an influx of persecuted Karen tribespeople and others seeking escape from the difficulties in their homeland. The experience was an incredible eye-opener for all of them — who have never seen such abject poverty and spartan living conditions, like that of the displaced communities here. They based out of the Feed My Lambs Shelter, which houses the children of Karens who are either orphaned or too poor to care for their kids to give them an education/ proper care. The girls assisted with English classes in the day with teens, and at night, assisted with the children’s homework and extra instruction.
They also visited a whole community which was recently devastated by floods, where their shanty homes were destroyed. Their hearts went out to many people whom they hope to help with projects when they return to Sweden. On the fun side, the girls also spent time baking almost 100 cinnamon rolls for the children at the shelter, which was gone in seconds after distribution! They also brought some of their Swedish fun and games, in playing with the kids. Their only regret? “We all wished we could have spent more time there,” Hanna said, in speaking for everyone. “And,” she added, ” we’d recommend this experience in Mae Sot for all future interns!” There’s nothing like having your heart broken so that it’s soft and with that softness, you will understand the essence of social work and learn to care for others.
