Value-Added Holiday!
What’s better than helping out one charity? Help THREE — alll at the same time! This was an unusual arrangement that came about from a last-minute decision for a group of visiting Singaporeans who wanted to help out with some needy community while on their holiday. Being just a hop and a skip away, an increasing number of Singaporeans are visiting Bangkok more frequently. However, when you’ve shopped at every superstore, browsed every bargain, dined at every wellknown foodie jaunt, what more is there to do?? Well, that’s what the Darwin clan of relatives asked themselves. on this recent visit. With some advice from someone who knows of our projects, we quickly hooked up over the weekend and arranged to help not just one but three of CTM’s community services. First off, we arranged a brand new van to take the group of ten around — sourced from our Haven Foundation partner, Mr Mark, who works and helps the displaced Pakistani asylum-seekers.
Every bit of business is a help to support their work. Then, we arranged for a visit to the Emergency Home. The group offered to buy pizzas and ice-cream for the kids. But then, what else could we do? That’s when we got the inspiration to call on the kids from the Thanksgiving Home who are all little magicians, having been coached by expert magician, Khun Wanchai, director of the Home. The Thanksgiving team happily agreed to bring their magic show over . After everyone enjoyed the wide array of pizzas, we all sat around to enjoy some amazing tricks performed by this team of developmentally-challenged kids. After the show, Khun Wanchai brought out some DIY sets of magic tricks for the kids and audience to try out. Adding a little drama to the event was when one of the doves used in a magic trick, flew right out of the room, into a swamp of monitor lizards. This would have been her demise there. Ken, CTM staffer, immediately sprang to his feet and somehow jumped across the muddy waters and got there in time to save the bird.
Then, we had to send a boat to get him back. After the show, the team took a tour around the Home, visiting the babies in the nursery as well. The families then contributed a generous donation to Thanksgiving Home, to help with their projects and repair of their van while also giving the funds for a future excursion for the kids from the shelter! Wow! What a wonderful 3-in-1 whopper of a value-added tourist destination!!
