What a Difference!
MAKING SUCH A DIFFERENCE IN SUCH A SHORT TIME! With the daily oversight and physical care of some 25 kids by just a couple of overseers, it has been difficult to attend to the maintenance of Bahn Dek at the Emergency Home Nothing has really been done since the floods of 2011. As such, there has been a buildup of broken and used equipment with nests of ants, creepy crawlies in this back yard of the children’s home. Recently, a team of eight students ( all girls!) and a couple of teachers from an international school visited Bahn Dek for just an hour after school, to join CTM staff in the big job of clearing all this excess furniture and junk.
It was a commendable effort as the girls braved the initial sight of a mountain of dirty, broken junk that had to be cleared — we made rounds to the garbage dump as well as to the Handyman storage where all extra wood, paints and materials could be recycled or used. Special thanks to Teacher Matt who was ‘knight in shining armor’, who took on the battle with the ant nests and did the more difficult tasks. It was most satisfying, at the end of the day, to see the whole backyard cleared, swept and ready for use – when we will be able to do something more beneficial with this space. We are hoping to renovate and extend the small storage room they currently have into something much bigger so that the kids’ living area can be increased (it’s now cluttered with bikes, toys and stuff).
Amazing what a difference we made — a little effort by a small team for just an hour!
