The dilemma of school holidays
The dilemma of school holidays….
While most kids look forward to school breaks, we face a different scenario at the Pho Thong slum.
School provided structure for the kids — a place to go with oversight and activities …and FOOD. The kids get breakfast and lunch at the school they attend.
However, when school closes for the long summer holidays like what we have now, the kids stay home in the slum where their caregivers may/may not be there, especially those with a single breadwinner/guardian. The kids are out to fend for themselves.
There are a couple of compassionate folks there, like Pi Jeab, who has taken upon herself to assist where she can, however she can with the kids who know that she won’t turn them away if they ask her for a little something to eat.
Pi Jeab recently reached out to us to ask for help, beyond the weekly budget given to help cover her caregiving for a handicapped father and his two young sons.
Now that the kids are all at the slum all day, more food is needed.
Thanks to a generous contribution by Mr Rodri Lopez, we were able to get two bags of about 100 kgs of rice to help ease the situation. Besides using the rice to feed the kids, we are hoping that with this, we can kickstart the RICE BANK program where while one bag is consumed for meals, the other can be sold in the community and then the proceeds can be used to buy the next month’s bag of rice. To really make this work, we need a couple more bags of rice sponsored or donated, so that there will always be a bag in stock for use and one for sale.
