Songkran Smiles!
CTM hosted an event for residents at the Emergency Home to bring on some Songkran smiles, especially for the older & pregnant residents who don’t have much of a chance for special outings or activities during this holiday season, Songkran Splash!
We may be a wee late for Songkran but what the heck, we’re gonna have FUN! That’s what CTM set out to do today at the Emergency Home.
With some help from our friends including Chomthana with their yummy Cremo coconut cream popsicles, and the parent association of KIS international school who helped sponsor the prize money for the inhouse Talent contest, we had a blast!
The morning started with the kids, teens, pregnant mommies and HIV-recovering women all getting themselves prettied up for their performances in the Talent contest. Everyone in the Home was invited to team up and come up with a presentation – a dance, song or skit…it was totally up to them.
Six of the teens opened the program with a lively dance, followed by the children from Bahn Dek shedding their shyness in an impressive choreographed number. This team bagged the second prize of 800 baht. The single moms were up next and though there were three performers, it was essentially a solo by one of them who was such a natural in her moves. The fourth item was a nice break from the dances when we had a very-pregnant-solo-singing Mommy take the mike with ‘My Heart Will Go On’ in English! Impressive . But that wasn’t all. Then six of her similarly pregnant friends came on stage and they performed a skit together, which ended in another solo song in Thai! That had to take the cake and top prize cash envelope of 1000 baht! The fifth presentation came from a few ladies from the recovery department along with a couple of teens. The women danced while the teens sang. An interesting combination and they won the third prize of 500 baht.
For a bit of fun, we invited everyone for some good splashing fun with our water balloon toss. Teamed up with a partner across them, they had to toss the water balloons back and forth as they moved a step back each time. They were all really good until we made the game a tad more difficult by challenging them to catch the balloons with ONE hand! That quickly eliminated a whole bunch of them, leaving us with two winning finalists! They were awarded prizes – Glico Pocky plus any of the pretty stuffed animals from the bag!
We also invited everyone to choose from the table of donated clothes – but the catch was that whatever they took, they’d have to show it off in a catwalk! When the music came on, the girls and women took on the pretentious ‘glamor’ of the catwalk, let their hair down (literally) and sashayed down to the rhythmic beat of the hit “Happy”. They had fun! All the ladies who participated were given a box of eye-shadow makeup plus a chance to select their choice of bedsheets or towels.
Afterall that activity, we finally settled down for a nice Isaan lunch of kai yang, somtam and khao niew, which was simply saap ileeee (isaan lingo for delicious!)
Special thanks to KIS school parent association reps — Khun Earng, her boys, Mr Claudio, his wife Ying and their three kids who helped in today’s activity. Thanks to Dusty as well who helped to emcee the program.
