Finally, Dream Come True!
Dream Come True! Last Thursday, we finally realized our Dream Kitchen for Baan Dek! With the help of key corporate partners like INDEX LIVING MALL, TEKA Kitchen Appliances , FIVE Brothers Trading Co. as well as some individual sponsors, we at CTM were able to connect all the dots and create the biggest change in the structural facility of the Children’s Home (Baan Dek) in the Emergency Shelter – a protective home for victims of abuse, hard times, domestic violence, rape, HIV) We made history as the old 27-year-old concrete sink, counter and dilapidated cupboards made way for a brand new professional kitchen setup. Where the old kitchen was just a mismatch of whatever furniture they could find, Baan Dek can now show off a beautiful, matching set of kitchen cupboards by Index, along with the superb steel fabrication of a 10-foot stunning stainless steel counter & storage, which includes TEKA’s contribution of two large sinksets .
Besides the physical improvement, we found that the staff were also really uplifted with this renovation and transformation. Baan Dek’s main housekeeper was all smiles that day ! “Feels like heaven today!” she said as she shared how it was a strain for her to bend over for long periods to wash the dishes in the old 70cm high sink setup. The new sink counter is 90cm, and she is now a very happy housekeeper!!
It was a full day’s work – a BIG job getting rid of all vestiges of the old, as the concrete counter had to be removed and new plumbing set up.. Our French construction partner, Bouygues-Thai, so kindly helped with the equipment we needed for the job, along with a driver/truck who took care of getting our supplies. Besides the extremely generous donation of such a long stainless steel counter, FIVE BROTHERS also fabricated and made a special kids’ size sink with three faucets for the little ones to be able to wash up themselves when they need to!
Index also donated a wall shelf storage for the children’s clothes, as well as a nice big desk for Baan Dek office work.
Thanks to several individuals ( plus a couple of Facebook connections!), we were able to engage a few able-bodied handymen (who are also from a needy community,& who were very thankful for the job and the funds we gave them for their labors!) – Just love how in such a project, we can assist and bless others as well. On hand to help that day were also two American ladies who jumped in to help with some painting, during their break time, while the kids were taking their siesta. At 6pm, when the pvc pipes were all installed and water was running through the faucets, and I was ready to pack up, our ever-cheerful and willing hndymen offered to pain the whole strech of wall behind the counter! This was the only eye-sore in the whole picture as it badly needed a new paint job! Though everyone was exhausted, we all knew this had to be done in order to really complete the job of setting up this new kitchen. With great enthusiasm, the three guys got their paintbrushes and in an amazing record time of 40mins, they completed the whole wall!
It took a while longer, but we all agreed it was well worth it, as we packed to leave, knowing that the job was completely done, something we were happy to be part of!
We really couldn’t have done it without the help of so many willing hearts and hands! Thank You so much for all your support!!
